MapMyRun

A new and improved fitness tracking experience

The Problem

Less than half of new users save their workout within their first 7 days on MapMyRun. Our goal was to improve this number and grow retention by examining the features that make up the new user experience.

My Role

MapMyRun is split into two teams, Core and Coaching. I was the Core team’s lead product designer for iOS and Android. My role was heavily focused on improving our ‘Startup to Save’ experience.

Evaluating the pre-record and save experience

We completed usability studies on the pre-record journey, including activity and route selection.

Usability problems

System status is not visible

Activity selector and gear icon take user to the same place and are creating visual clutter

Cluttered design

Buttons on map are easily lost. We need to reconsider hierarchy, grouping, and clear call to action. Hold to finish process causing several errors.

Lack of consistency

There is lack of unified styling and color palette. Several icon styles are being used

New and improved route selection

Updated activity selection, in-progress screen, and start/discard buttons

Save workout experience

We also completed usability studies on the save workout journey, including saving/discarding workouts, adding photos, and logging non-trackable workouts.

Usability problems

Lack of consistency

‘Save’ and ‘Discard’ are both located in the top toolbar, which is inconsistent with other flows.

Action buttons are on the same level

Both call to actions buttons are the same hierarchy and style; ‘Save’ is the more important action.

Experience is not intuitive

There is a lot of empty white space. Toggles and actions are unclear.

Save workout: New Save / Discard Screen

In order to call more attention to the ‘Save’ action, I created a new docked button style for our design system. Sections on this page are easily editable, so users can change the name of their workout and add notes. The ‘discard’ action button is now using a tertiary style below the fold.

Save workout: Non-trackable workouts

MapMyRun has over 100+ workout types, and not all of them are trackable. I designed a typographic cover image for these types of workouts to replace the route.

Save workout: Photo gallery

By tapping the camera icon on the save screen, users can upload their own photos and use the editor to select stats to overlay their image.

Save workout: Widgets

I designed a variety of widgets for MapMyRun. The widgets pull users top activity types to start a workout, showcase running mileage for the week, making it easier than ever for them to start their workout.
